AOC Europe Preview: TMD Solid State Microwave Power Modules

Advanced Capability for EW, Radar and ECM Applications

TMD Technologies, now a Communications & Power Industries company, will be showing a range of defence and homeland security products at AOC Europe in Liverpool next month, including the new PTS10147 solid state power amplifier (SSPA) for EW and radar, and the PTXM2000 microwave power module (MPM) for high performance radar and ECM systems.

Because of Covid-19, the AOC Europe exhibition has been postponed several times,” commented TMD Sales Director, Nigel Hann. “We are looking forward to finally being at the show in Liverpool in October and meeting up with some of the many visitors – ranging from military personnel with wide EW expertise, to government decision makers.”

Compact and lightweight, the new broadband PTS10147 operates over the 2-6GHz frequency range with a high power of 100W (pulsed or CW) and a linear gain of up to 60dB. Its excellent power performance and very compact and lightweight construction has been achieved by employing gallium nitride (GaN) high power transistors in the output and driver stages. This design provides the benefit of a power-to-volume ratio believed to be the highest on the market for such a product.

The PTS10147 is particularly effective in electronic attack (jamming) roles. Moreover, its small size and light weight – combined with high power – make is ideal in radar or EW installations used in UAS, drones, or man-portable systems.

The broadband PTXM2000 operates from 6-18 GHz at 200W. Comprising a high-power ‘super-mini’ travelling wave tube (TWT), a solid-state preamplifier, and switched mode power supply, it offers a single ‘drop-in’ microwave amplifier unit without the need for potentially unreliable high-voltage TWT interconnections.

Included in the MPM is a high-speed focus electrode modulator to permit operation at high-pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs), making it ideal for pulsed applications such as electronic counter measure (ECM) and radars. A low gain TWT, together with a low noise solid state preamplifier provides optimum noise performance.  The PTXM2000 operates over a wide temperature range, and at high altitudes and humidity.

Offering very low volume and light weight, TMD’s TWT-based PTXM Series MPMs are designed for airborne radar, EW and communications and are ideal for UAS. They operate over the 4.5-18GHz range, with output powers up to 140W. Incorporating mini-TWTs and super efficiency packaging, they offer one of the highest power densities on the market.
