Boats Sponsored by Japan and UN
The Ghana Police Service Marine Unit took delivery on 13 July of two aluminium-hulled Ally-Gator boats sponsored by the Japanese embassy and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The boats appear to be AG 480 ENDURO models, manufactured by T-Craft of South Africa. With a length of 4.8m and powered by a single Mercury engine, the boats can carry six passengers. Under its Global Maritime Crime Programme, UNODC is helping the Ghana Marine Police with maritime law enforcement issues, including training and education. Some training has been conducted jointly with the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
Ghana has previously received four patrol boats donated by China in September 2017 and procured at least two 46m patrol vessels from Poly Technologies in China in 2008, which were commissioned in 2011. The navy also operates small patrol and fast attack craft sourced from Germany, South Korea and the US.
