Airspeed and MBDA in Land 400 Bid

MBDA selected Australian company Airspeed for MMP Land 400 bid

Following-up on the Memorandums of Understanding French company MBDA signed in October 2017 with Australian companies, on 12 February MBDA selected Airspeed to develop advanced composite material manufacturing techniques for MBDA’s Land 400 MMP (Missile Moyenne Portée) bid.

MBDA’s MMP missile is a fifth generation anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) that features both fire-and-forget and man-in-the-loop operation. Network-enabled, the MMP also receives third party target designation for indirect firing scenarios.

The ATGW is designed for dismounted infantry as well as for integration on combat vehicles, and in the context of MBDA’s bid for Land 400, Airspeed, which designs and builds in composite materials for defence, aerospace and energy resource sectors, will explore alternative production options for MMP launch tubes.

MBDA Australia Managing Director, Andy Watson, said: “It is only natural for MBDA to work with Airspeed to develop similarly cutting-edge production techniques that could create more efficient and cost effective manufacturing methods. The work that Airspeed will do on this project is a real demonstration of Australian high-tech capability in the defence industry and opens up future global supply chain opportunities.

The contract with Airspeed is the latest in a series of agreements between MBDA and Australian companies, which demonstrates the French company’s commitment to Australian Industrial Capability requirements.
