Imagery and Elevation Data Now Available in Azure Maps
Airbus has begun supplying high-resolution imagery from its PLÉIADES, PLÉIADES NEO and SPOT constellations to Microsoft, for use in the commercial AZURE MAPS service. Elevation data processed by Airbus’s WORLDDEM4ORTHO system is also included in the deal.
AZURE MAPS is a collection of geospatial products and tools which allow Microsoft customers to incorporate maps, spatial analytics and “location-aware” applications in their digital products. Airbus says data will “empower the AZURE MAPS users to build location intelligence solutions for Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence and create data visualizations for web and mobile apps.”
The data supplied includes a new version of the ONEATLAS BASEMAP product Airbus has created, based on a 1.5m imagery layer and with 50cm resolution imagery of many of the world’s cities. This resolution will be improved, with 30cm imagery from PLÉIADES NEO soon to be included.
“The extensive AZURE MAPS user base, who is eager for accurate and top-quality imagery, will be able to rely on Airbus’ premium data services to develop new applications and turn their innovative ideas into reality,” said François Lombard, Airbus Defence & Space Director of Intelligence Business.
Where high-resolution overhead imagery was once the preserve of governments, agencies and militaries, the information is now a major global commercial business. Airbus has been selling its premium satellite imagery and associated data products under the ONE ATLAS brand since 2016.
