AFCEA Bonn: Secure Mobility for Government Networks

Aruba networking and security solutions

Aruba networking and security solutions have been deployed in thousands of American federally-validated and policy-compliant wired and wireless networks for major branches of the US government and armed services. Aruba’s solutions enable the use of commercially available mobile devices to securely access networks that handle unclassified, confidential and classified data, all on a single network.

Aruba Adaptive Trust for example, shares rich contextual data across disparate network security solutions to eliminate any potential security gaps. The result is a coordinated defense where all security components function as one integrated system without affecting employee productivity. With this defensive framework, enterprise access management systems can easily leverage context from a multitude of sources to scrutinise user and device status before and after they connect. This data is exchanged with enterprise mobility management (EMM), network firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and other security solutions. The glue that makes it all work consists of common representational state transfer (REST) APIs and syslog-type data feeds. To address urgend needs and help modernise its US installations, US Army Materiel Command selected Aruba Networks. Aruba was chosen as the exclusive provider of WLANs to AMC because it was the only FIPS 140-2-compliant provider on the US Army’s approved products list. Aruba was also the only provider to offer a full spectrum of products and services that met AMC’s needs, including 802.11n and wireless mesh. The Aruba validated controllers meet stringent DoD security standards including FIPS, DoD Directives 8100.2 and 8420.1, and Common Criteria. The APs provide secure wireless connectivity to client devices and tunnel all wireless LAN traffic to one or more mobility controllers located in the distribution or core of the network. The Aruba WLAN solution enables AMC personnel to connect to each other within a facility and connect from these facilities to the main AMC databases.

Aruba’s WLAN allows AMC to take advantage of the Army’s LMP program by providing a FIPS-compliant wireless network for transmission of inventory data to Command databases. With Aruba’s WLAN, inventory information is now collected on the spot, saving time, increasing productivity and reducing errors. This is currently being presented to the German Armed Forces.
