Retrofittable System Can Fit Multiple Vehicle Types

ABD Solutions, the UK-based division of AB Dynamics Group, has fitted its autonomous driving system to a Wolfhound tactical support vehicle, and demonstrated the capability during a technology innovation event.

The integration was developed in partnership with NP Aerospace, the engineering authority for the UK’s protected mobility fleet. The system includes control devices, object-detection and reaction systems, and mission-planning software. It can be used on any vehicle with a traditional steering wheel and accelerator/brake pedals, and the vehicle can still be driven by a human when it is installed.

The company argues its solution represents a cost-effective way of meeting emerging vehicle autonomy requirements. Key applications include de-mining, counter-IED and combat resupply missions. As well as reducing the risks of putting a human driver in harm’s way, autonomous operation reduces burden on logistic supply chains and can extend the life of platforms. ABD’s system enables a single operator to drive multiple vehicles at the same time, so the technology also potentially frees up personnel for other tasks. There are also likely to be training benefits, as autonomous vehicles can be controlled with precision and programmed to repeat exercise tasks exactly.

“The defence industry wants to accelerate the autonomy of its vehicles, as it has significant safety and cost benefits,” said Matthew Price, ABD Solutions’ MD. “One of the key challenges is maximising the substantial investment already made in the current fleet. Our product enables these legacy vehicles to be automated, today. Existing fleets can be automated for use in a variety of operations. We believe this could be a life-saving technology.”
