Abacus Analytical Showcases On-Site Chemical Analysis Systems

World’s Smallest GC-MS Spectrometer Now Available to First Responder Market

From the wide range of products and services available from Berlin-based Abacus Analytical Systems, Mönch selects two that are particularly appropriate for on-site analytical chemistry.

The PROGENY ResQ Raman spectrometer from Rigaku has been developed as a hand-held device specifically for the deployed analyst in the field. Users can achieve laboratory quality level results in tough operating environments, analysing solids, powders and liquids non-destructively – and often through the associated packaging.

PROGENY ResQ incorporates a comprehensive chemical database to MIL-SPEC 810G and IP68 standards, in a rugged, portable form, supporting first responders and emergency management operatives by providing a capability for active response to an incident at the scene of the event – thereby protecting emergency responders and the public.

Perkin-Elmer’s TORION T-9 is the world’s smallest GC-MS spectrometer, with a total weight of 14 kilogrammes. Featuring an integrated lithium-ion battery and a helium cartridge, the exceptionally mobile unit could be coupled to a miniaturised ion trap coupled to an MS system, providing high sensitivity for more effective analysis.

Designed to detect environmental pollutants in the field, the TORION T-9 features innovative touchscreen technology and enables rapid display of the results – a key benefit for users. Taking a mere five minutes to deploy, from ‘power on’ to commencement of analysis, the device carries out its sampling and injection roles using patented SPME needles, suitable for solids, liquids and gases. The easy-to-use software means that relatively unskilled operators can use the device, without the need for device-specific training. Results are stored in a protocol in tabular form and are easy to understand, but can also be further processed with the help of PC-supported software.
