Lightweight, modular platform delivering sharper imaging, AI-enabled tracking, and future-ready connectivity
Chess Dynamics, part of the Cohort plc Group, has announced the upgrade of EOSS-D (Electro-Optical Surveillance System-Digital), the latest evolution of Chess Dynamics’ electro-optical surveillance technology.
Building on 17 years of operational success, EOSS-D introduces a modern, fully digital architecture, enhanced sensor options, and integrated AI-enabled video tracking. Modular and portable, it also retains the proven reliability and compact form factor of the original designs trusted by operators worldwide.
The enhanced EOSS-D is designed to meet the growing surveillance and targeting demands of today’s complex, multi-domain threat environment, whether that be for land (Hawkeye EOSS-D) or maritime (SeaEagle EOSS-D) applications. The system integrates Ethernet-based control in place of legacy interfaces, streamlining connectivity and seamless integration into command-and-control networks. It is also backwards compatible with many legacy Cobra-based systems, providing a clear and cost-effective upgrade path for existing users.
“EOSS-D represents a new standard in EO surveillance,” said Mark Byfield, Managing Director at Chess Dynamics. “It gives customers a step-change in capability without sacrificing the size, portability, and reliability they value. By combining a proven platform with modern digital architecture and AI-enabled tracking, we’re giving operators sharper eyes, smarter tracking, and easier integration, all in one package.”
Proven pedigree, digital core
The EOSS-D platform is based on Chess’s analogue SeaEagle EOSS system (in service since 2011) and the utilises its widely deployed Cobra positioner. Its fully digital system architecture replaces legacy analogue interfaces with a single Ethernet connection, simplifying installation, enabling remote control from virtually any location, and ensuring adaptability to future mission profiles and sensor technologies.
Video Tracking on the Edge – with Scalable CHARM capability
A key advantage of the digital Cobra architecture is video tracking on the edge using Chess’s Vision4ce CHARM video tracker family. This integrated approach is what enables the system’s single, simple Ethernet connection, eliminating the need for multiple legacy interfaces.
The CHARM capability is also fully scalable to customer needs, with CHARM100 and CHARM150 versions available, both offering configurable software options to match mission requirements. This flexibility allows operators to select the exact performance level they need, from rapid small target tracking to complex multi-object classification without changing the core platform.
High-performance modular sensor suite
Designed to support a payload of approximately 30kg (including payload structure), EOSS-D now supports an all-in-one payload including thermal, HD TV, laser range-finding, and Vision4ce CHARM tracker modules.
- MWIR Thermal Camera: Long range, passive surveillance optimised for low visibility and night operations
- HD TV Camera (Piranha): High-definition, colour imaging with powerful zoom for daylight target identification
- Laser Range Finder: Precise distance measurement to support targeting and situational awareness
- Integrated Vision4ce CHARM Video Tracker: AI-enabled tracking and classification with DEFT CORR technology to maintain lock in cluttered or dynamic environments
Compact, Modular, and Field-Ready
Weighing less than 45kg including a typical sensor payload, EOSS-D remains portable and adaptable for vehicle-mounted, maritime, or static deployments. Sensors can be swapped or upgraded in the field without replacing the entire system, offering a future-proof and cost-effective approach for evolving operational needs. Whether on land or at sea, EOSS-D equips operators to detect, track and identify with confidence, precision, and speed in the face of increasingly complex threats.
