First vehicle integration by mid-2027
RENK Group AG has commenced development of a forward-looking – the HSWL 406 – that is specially designed to meet the requirements of the next generation of battle tank platforms. The HSWL 406 is intended for heavy tracked vehicles from 50 to over 70 tons and will set new standards in military drive technology with its modular architecture and unprecedented level of digitalization.
This independent development is the RENK Group’s response to the current diversity of vehicle platforms in Europe, which is leading to considerable efficiency losses. CEO of RENK Group AG Dr. Alexander Sagel sees this as important impetus for consolidation in the field of military drive solutions: “Very few NATO tracked military vehicles drive, steer or brake without RENK technology. The introduction of a modular battle tank transmission will strengthen the logistical commonality of the armed forces, achieve faster availability of spare parts, and enable cross-platform supply and maintenance.”
The modular design not only ensures compatibility with all relevant engine manufacturers, it also enables a range of configurations and flexible adaptation to platforms of different weight classes – without having to change the architecture of the respective vehicle platform. “The HSWL 406 is setting standards in the development of propulsion solutions for heavy tracks. Our investment in innovation and modularity reinforces our position as technology North Star by offering our customers future-viable, high-performance and market-ready solutions at attractive conditions,” said CEO Vehicle Mobility Solutions, RENK GmbH Michael Masur.
The HSWL 406 uses the ATREX propulsion concept introduced in 2024 as a technology carrier and has fully integrated drive-by-wire functionality. Initial functional tests are currently being carried out. A digital interface will lay the foundation for future autonomous drive solutions in armored vehicles.
The aim is to integrate the first vehicle by mid-2027. This will be followed by customer testing and qualification. The recently completed HSWL 076 demonstrates RENK’s ability to develop market-ready solutions in under two years.
