DSA 2018: Relay Race

Kongsberg promotes RL-542A

Tactical communications were very much on display during the DSA 2018 exhibition being held in Kuala Lumpur between 16 April and 19 April, with Kongsberg promoting its RL-542A tactical radio link to existing and prospective customers in the Asia-Pacific region. The architecture of the RL-542A sees the radio link unit being mounted on a mast close to its antenna and is connected to its IP (Internet Protocol) router via an Ethernet cable. This can allow the mast and RL-542A to be positioned up to one kilometre (0.6 miles) from a headquarters, allowing signallers positioning the system to take advantage of local topography to improve line-of-sight ranges. Moreover, the entire ensemble can be remotely controlled using Kongsberg’s communications management system. Covering a 4.4 gigahertz/GHz to five gigahertz waveband, the RL-542A can handle data loads of between 1024 kilobits-per-second up to 100 megabits-per-second. In terms of resistance to electronic attack, the radio comes equipped with a standard adaptive frequency hopping mode offering rates of between 2048 and 8448 hops-per-second.
