Defence Structure: The President is the C-in-C of the Armed Forces for the Defence of Mozambique (FADM in the Portuguese acronym), and he appoints and demotes the top military com- manders who are answerable to him. The 1,500-strong Special Mobile Force and the 1,170-strong National Coast Guard, sup- ported by a an Air Wing (Police Helicopter Squadron and Maritime Air Squadron) are manned by personnel on rotation from other Police assignments, and perform para-mili- tary duties. The Coast Guard has a fleet of some 8 patrol craft of different types (includ- ing 2 50m VICTORY-class fast patrol vessels) as well as some 40 smaller boats, while the Maritime Air Squadron operates 3 Do-228 maritime patrol aircraft and the Helicopter Squadron has 4 light helicopters. NB: A major development programme for the National Coast Guard is being launched (“Project Trident”) with Indian support. This includes most notably a new HQs and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. Budget (Police Service): RS 561.60 million (some US$15.5 million)(2018/19 budget). Projected to be RS 1,213.40 in 2019/20 and RS 1,819.60 in 2020/21, due to the invest- ments for “Project Trident”.
